Iconic Bluffton Christmas ads - Part 1

Santa's headquarters 130 years ago was Staater's Dry Goods

featuring the latest iron and wooden toys

To assist Bluffton shoppers, Bluffton Forever will feature several downtown business holiday ads this month. Most of these advertisers assume you know their location since they do not list an address in the advertisement.

The first in this series is from the Dec. 21, 1893, Bluffton News, 130 Christmases ago. It’s from the W.J. Staater store, known as Santa Claus’ headquarters.

According to Mr. Staater, Our motto is: “The most and best goods for the least money.”

Featured in this nearly one-half page advertisement are the latest iron and wooden toy including:

• Horses, donkeys, musical instruments, trains, cars, wagons, etc.

• Pianos, dolls’ furniture, sets of dishes all for Christmas

• Nice line of vases, China cups and saucers and novelties

• Tin toys of every descriptions and all sold at very cheap prices

In addition, Staater’s store offers a line of dry goods, notions and groceries. As the ad states: The highest price paid for produce.
