When men's softball was king

Here’s the Triplett 1945 softball team.

Front from left, Oliver Steiner, Kenneth Moser, Hubert Basinger, Donavin Moser, Ralph Augsburger, Richard Burkholder, Timer Spaeth, Paul Eikenbary, Bert Swank, Maynard Geiger.

Second row from left, A.C. Burcky (coach), Roger Berky, Robert Luginbill, Jud Johnson, Fred Swank, Norman Triplett, Robert Gratz, Arden Baker, Gail Mumma and Wilford Gratz.

In front is the team mascot, Lynn Carmack.

Here’s an account of the team’ season in the Triplett employee newsletter:

Why the Triplett softball team is rolling along at an undefeated pace, with seven consecutive victories to its credit, was demonstrated last Friday night when the locals bested Lima Eagles 1 to 0, in one of the best-played games ever seen at Harmon field.

In the winning contest, the Triplett team was forced into extra innings, and it was not until the last of the 10th that Timer Spaeth finally won his own game to blast out a single, scoring Max Russell who had walked.

Plenty of fireworks preceded that inning, however, for Spaeth had hurled no-hit ball for the regulation distance, spectacular catches had been made by Nonnamaker, Bert Swank and Rog Berky, and Spaeth was supported all the way by errorless fielding support of the highest caliber.

The Triplett team has four shut-out victories to its credit and has scored 66 runs to seven made by their opponents.
